CRP-R100: Ceramics Studio Introduction and Sign-off

Welcome to the Ceramics Studio! We will go over the tools and equipment, as well as best practices, policies, and processes for using the space. This class will be required to use the ceramics studio starting January 2026. 

Topics we will cover: 

• Using the space and expectations including clean up
• Basics of using clay and types of clay
• Score and Slip techniques
• Basics of using the tools and an overview of the most commonly used tools
• Basics of Underglazes, Glazes, and differences to watch for
• Using the Slab Roller
• What a clay extruder is used for
• Overview of Pottery Wheel Use (But not how to use in this class)
• Drying your clay and things to avoid
• How to get your clay fired and our Kiln firing process

Note that this list may be adjusted based on the interests of the class. 

This will be a red tool sign-off for the ceramics studio. It is just to use the space and does not include operation of the kiln. We will be in the Kiln room, Wet room and lower building classroom at Makersmiths Purcellville. 

If new to Makersmiths, please fill out the waiver form.
