Blacksmithing. Pfriem ( pronounced 'freem') and Knife. This is a Medieval fork and knife beginner workshop in the blacksmith area of MS-Purcellville.

Before forks had 3 or 4 tines, they had 2. Before that, they had 1. In this Intermediate Blacksmithing Workshop you will make a set of medieval fork and knife utensils, the Pfriem (freem) and Knife. Starting with some high carbon steel square, you will forge both of the implements, finish grind to shape, normalize, harden, temper, and polish. Skills investigated include upsetting, drawing out, twisting, bending, Normalizing, Hardening, Tempering, finishing.. (The amount of polishing is left up to you.) While Makersmiths has a wide selection of metal finishing tools available to members, complete finishing may be accomplished with typical home hand tools.

Bring safety glasses, work gloves to protect hands, and a dust mask to avoid all the abrasive dust you will make. Hearing protection optional but recommended.

All tools and materials, and use of the Forge, are included (billet steel, scale material, pins, abrasives, and polish).

Due to the advance preparation of materials we can accept no cancellations or refunds for this workshop. The only exception will be for weather or something that makes the space unavailable.
