This is an Intermediate knife making workshop. Generally you should know your way around the wood shop, beginner to intermediate skills. All tools and materials are included (flat steel blank, scale material, pins, abrasives, and polish). This picture is just one example of the knife blank with which you will start. Knife 201 session one will be in the green room for the first hour and then the blacksmith shop. In session 2, we will be in the blacksmith shop. In session 3, we will use the metal shop. There will be independent time grinding in the metal shop between sessions.
In this workshop you will take a cut out blank of flat knife steel and, using stock removal (grinding and sanding), you will shape and bevel the bare stock. You will Normalize, Harden, and Temper your knife. You will attach, shape, and finish scales and put an edge on your knife. This workshop will require some outside work on your part to finish your blade (depending on the amount of fit and finish you desire). The workshop will meet 3 times. First meeting 5/16 to discuss processes and select knife blanks, second meeting 5/23 for hardening, and third meeting 5/26 for scales and finishing.
Bring safety glasses, work gloves to protect hands, and a dust mask to avoid all the wood and abrasive dust you will make. Hearing protection optional but recommended.
Due to the advance preparation of materials, we cannot accept cancellations or refunds for this workshop. The only exception will be for weather or something that makes the space unavailable.
About the Knife Workshops
We are offering additional workshops that one would need to sign up to take separately. The cost for each workshop will be similar. The first workshop in the series works with a pre-cut and beveled knife blank. This workshop in the series, will start with a basic cut-out shape of knife steel and, using stock removal (grinding and sanding) shape the blade, then attach scales, finish, and sharpen the custom result. The third workshop starts with a raw billet of steel that will need to be forged into a knife shape, ground, polished, have scales attached, sharpened and finished. A fourth workshop will be offered to create a leather sheath for your creation.
