This fun, hands-on workshop for youth is an introduction to the Stem Lingo Arduino activity kit that is designed for ages 12+. Participants will be introduced to circuits, programming and the purposes of microcontrollers that read inputs from sensors and turn those inputs into outputs to make something work such as lighting up a bulb or making a sound. During the workshop, they will complete two projects: A reaction time measurement project and a music project that involves seeing how a Theremin electronic musical instrument is controlled without physical contact by the performer. Fun, friendly competition activities will include seeing who has the fastest reaction time and working with others to complete a musical piece using Theremins.
Pre-requisite: It is not necessary to have computer programming skills, but one should have basic skills operating a computer.
Materials provided: The instructor will provide a handout of resources and basic information about Arduinos, laptops and Stem Lingo Arduino kits to use during the workshop.
