
Get to know the basics of blacksmithing with this hands-on instructional class at Makersmiths in Purcellville. Nothing needs to be purchased for this course in advance.
Note: This is not a red tool class that certifies you for unsupervised access to the blacksmithing area, but information about the red tool class will be discussed during this class.
What we will cover in this class:
- Safety steps for safe blacksmithing.
- Blacksmithing tools like hammers, anvils, tongs, the forge, and PPE.
- The properties of different kinds of steel and what they are used for.
- How to heat your work and understanding metal temperatures.
- The different ways to form, draw, and taper your work.
- How to properly cool your work.
- Methods of finishing your pieces.
- Steps toward the Blacksmithing Red Tool class.
Only basic strength is required, like the ability to swing a hammer. Those with physical disabilities are welcome, and we can adjust the course to make accommodations.
Please wear comfortable clothing, made with natural fibers if possible (cotton) as it is generally more fire retardant, as well as closed toed shoes. All other tools, materials, and PPE will be provided.
