This course is an introduction to using Node-RED, a simple graphical programming language for automating microprocessor functions such as monitoring temperatures, triggering alarms, or controlling household automations.
The Introduction to Microprocessors and the Internet of Things course is a recommended pre-requisite, but not required.
In this course, you will be provided with a lab kit consisting of an arduino-based microprocessor connected to a sensor (water level or humidity, your choice) and related wiring. During the course you will program a Node-RED function to monitor that sensor to create a log file and email or SMS alerts when thresholds are reached.
We will also discuss the MQTT protocol which will be used for communication between the device and Node-RED.
No computer programming experience required for these sorts of basic function, as Node-RED is very user friendly.
You will need a computer connected to the internet for the email/sms functionality to work, and we will use Google Meet for the class. A web cam is recommended for troubleshooting if necessary.
