The Best Fit Face Mask

Fabric masks should have three layers at least, the WHO advises. The outer layer would be exposed to the environment, and the inner would be in contact with the skin; the internal layer(s) should be water-absorbing materials or fabrics, so that they absorb potentially infected droplets. Coatings are not recommended, as they can reduce airflow and even encourage contaminated air to escape around the sides of the mask.

After looking at numerous online patterns and videos for making a face mask, I settled on the “Better Fit Face Mask” designed by PrettyHandyGirl. As a general contractor and woodworker, Brittany wanted to create a form-fitting and comfortable mask that contains a pocket for a filter. This actually gives the masks four layers. The “Better Fit Face Mask” was designed in April 2020 and a tutorial with templates and written direstions can be found at:

Brittany invites us to share her tutorial so that is what I am doing. BUT, I also want to offer additional tips for creating a nose clip, ear guard for comfortable wear, elastic suggestions and materials for using as filters. Please download this Face Mask PDF to get my tips for finding the materials you will need to make your own best fit face mask!
