Using a CNC machine is a great way to add precision and repeatability to your woodworking projects. It makes some otherwise very difficult or impossible projects possible! The tricky part of CNC is that in order to complete your own custom projects, even a project as straightforward as a CNC cut sign, a wide set of skills is required. There’s a lot more to it than knowing how to secure the project material to the machine bed and run the machine without breaking anything.
The goal of this 90-minute class is to provide an overview of the skills required to complete 2 and 2.5 dimension CNC wood projects. The class will meet in the classroom at Makersmiths- Leesburg. Many of the skills can be learned at home in your spare time without needing to have immediate access to a CNC machine at all. The class will cover vector images, drawing and design tools, creating toolpaths, choosing endmills, feeds and speeds, securing material during cutting, as well as finishing and other tips and tricks along the way. This is the overview that the instructor of this class wishes he had before he pursued making his first CNC sign!
