This will be a 4-part class on using the Tormach CNC in the metalworking room. Participants will need a laptop with Fusion 360 loaded. All other tools and materials will be provided. Although this is an introductory class, some CAD experience would be useful.

At the end of this class the participants will be able to perform the following:

  1. Create CAM within Fusion 360
  2. Setup the Tormach
  3. Measure and prepare stock
  4. Run a multiple step milling process

Session 1 will cover machine setup and preparing stock.

We will be taking stock that is approximately 1.5x1.5 and creating a cube that is 1.40 on each side.  During this class we will do 1-2 blocks as a group and then people that do not get a chance to complete their stock setup can return on the following Monday or another co-ordinated time to complete their cubes.

Session 2 will cover CAM using Fusion 360

You will need to have your own laptop with Fusion 360 setup on it for this class.  We will cover CAM basics, feed and speed basics and post processing.  This will introduce the student to the tools available with the Tormach and also how to properly prepare a CAD file for milling.  We will discuss fixturing and work holding.  Since we are using a pre-designed part this class will not cover CAD, however we may modify the CAD to account for mistakes made in class one if mistakes happen :)

Session 3-4.  Machine operations and milling

We will use the Gcode created in Session 2 to start milling our parts. Since we can only have one student at a time milling you can decide which session you want to attend.  It is encouraged to attend both sessions as you can often learn from others as you go through the process.

The class cost covers mill time, end mills that we will use (and replacement if needed) and material to make one cube.  We will have additional material available in case you want to make more or mistakes are made.
