MS-P-Derby Car Build

It's Derby season...whether you're racing with Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, or another youth group, the first time you're given a box with a block of wood, four wheels and four nails can be a little intimidating. Building the car with your child is the most important part of the event. Makersmiths will provide the tools and the operators to make the major cuts (relatively simple ones, please...we'll have lots of people who want to get their cuts done!) and holes for your car. You can then sand it and get it ready for painting. We'll have suggestions for how to weigh your car up to the maximum allowed for your event.

At this drop-in event from 2-5PM, attendees will need to bring their own Derby car kits along with the directions that come with the kits. Meet in the Green Room for parents to sign waivers. Scouts will then draw designs on their blocks of wood for cutting. Then with an adult, they will take their blocks of wood into the wood shop to work with a Makersmiths member to cut out the car and get the axle holes drilled. Afterwards, attendees will go to a sanding station to use sandpaper and blocks to sand the car. A weigh station will have suggested items they could use to add weight and a scale to see what's needed. Donations of $5 per scout member will be greatly appreciated.
